Who and What is Love? A Biblical Understanding of God's Heart for Us

Love is one of the most searched-for, talked-about, and longed-for things in the world, yet it’s often misunderstood. Culture defines love through emotion, romance, or personal fulfillment. Scripture, however, offers a deeper and steadier truth: love is rooted in who God is and how He shows love and mercy to His creation.
When we turn to the Bible, we see that love is not fleeting or conditional. Love is intentional, sacrificial, restoring, and eternal. Understanding who and what love truly is begins with understanding God Himself.

Love Begins with God
Love does not start with us, it starts with God. From the very beginning, Scripture reveals a God who creates with purpose and cares deeply for His people.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
— John 3:16 (ESV)
This verse reminds us that love is not passive. God’s love moves toward us, gives freely, and seeks restoration. Love is not about what we earn, it’s about what God has already given.
God's Love Sees Your Worth
The Bible teaches that every person is created with dignity, value, and intention.
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them…”
— Genesis 1:27–28 (ESV)
Being made in God’s image means we are created to reflect love, creativity, and relationship. Love affirms our worth not because of our productivity or perfection, but because we belong to Him.
Love Stoops to Serve
One of the most powerful pictures of love in Scripture is Jesus humbly serving His disciples.
“Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.”
— John 13:1 (ESV)
In John 13, Jesus washes His disciples’ feet, an act of humility, service, and compassion. Biblical love is not about position or power. It is about choosing to serve, even when it costs something, whether that is your time, pride, or status.
Love Seeks the Lost
God’s love is personal, intentional, and pursuing.
“What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine… and go in search of the one that went astray?”
— Matthew 18:12–13 (ESV)
This passage reminds us that love does not give up. God’s love seeks, restores, and rejoices when what was lost is found. No one is overlooked or forgotten in His care.
God's Love Is Unbreakable
God’s love does not waver based on circumstances, suffering, or failure.
“For I am sure that neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
— Romans 8:35–39 (ESV)
This promise assures us that love is not fragile. God’s love remains constant through hardship, doubt, and change.
God's Love Brings Restoration and Hope
The story of love doesn’t end in brokenness, it ends in renewal.
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more…”
— Revelation 21:4 (ESV)
God’s love points us toward a future where pain is healed and peace is restored. Love is not only about the present moment, it is about the hope we carry forward.
Growing in Love from the Inside Out
God's love is meant to shape how we live, grow, and heal. When we understand who love is, God Himself, and what God's love does; restores, serves, seeks, and remains, we begin to grow from the inside out.
Love invites us to:
Rest in God’s care
Reflect on His character
Extend grace to ourselves and others
Walk forward with hope and purpose
True love is not something we strive to create on our own. It is something we receive from God and gently grow into, day by day.
